    What is an abnormal period?

    An average menstrual cycle is 28 days long but anything between 21 to 35 days is considered normal. Menstrual cycles depend on the woman’s body and several other factors like diet, lifestyle, etc. Generally, girls start their period between the age of 10-16 years and it takes them up to a year to have regular cycles.

    Menstrual Cycles

    On an average a menstrual cycle falls between 28 and 32 days. This varies due to multiple factors and results in a variation in the ovulation cycle as well. A typical cycle looks something like this –

    Day 1

    Your cycle begins on the first day of blood flow.

    Days 2-14

    The follicles on the ovary become active, and the cervical mucus starts to thin.

    Day 14

    Ovulation occurs mid-cycle, but can vary from between Day 11 and Day 21 of a woman's cycle. Rising estrogen levels trigger the LH surge, which causes the follicle to ovulate and release an egg. It's important to chart the basal body temperature and LH surge so you know when you ovulate.

    Days 15-22

    After releasing the egg, the follicle produces progesterone, which thickens the lining of the uterus for implantation.

    Days 23 to 24

    Implantation of a fertilized egg can take place. At this point, hormones produced by pregnancy may be detected by a pregnancy test.

    Days 25 to 28

    If pregnancy does not occur, the hormone levels begin to fall. The uterine lining sheds, resulting in the menstrual period.

    Ovulating Days

    Ovulation occurs between 12 and 14 days (on an average) before the menstrual period starts. To calculate the length of your average menstrual cycle make a note of the date of the first day of two consecutive menstrual cycles – The difference between the two dates is the average duration of your menstrual cycle. Ovulation occurs about two weeks before the next expected period. These are considered the most fertile days for a woman if you trying to get pregnant.
